ART THERAPY FOR CHILDREN by Alicia Campos Masso

Since 1998 I have conducted art therapy for children.

The main goal of this project is to give the children a space to express their feelings and hopes through painting and permanently exhibit them outdoors, on facades and public places. This, today, is a project that makes me feel very fortunate. With this experience, I have learnt to share my knowledge about art and psychology with these kids. Through art therapy I intended to reach these children in need of attention and care; children who have suffered abuses.

At the same time, I have worked through individual therapy with the children and had a great sample of projective drawings that I have had the opportunity to show in diverse conferences, among them one in the Humanities Center at Harvard University. With this project I have gained a better understanding of the abused children’s psychology, specially of the children who have lived traumatic events in the past and observe how those have/may influenced their present and will decide their future. I have guided four murals with kinder students in Hosmer, Cunniff and Lowell School in Watertown. My first murals in the US, with the cooperation of ArtEscapers, integrated by students from Harvard University. And I have gotten different grants to complete other murals. If you are interested in organizing one in your school or community center, I am always opened to volunteer.
